The Herring Lasses

This play is about family, secrets, ambitions and sacrifice – it is also about the sea and the way it gives to and takes from anyone whose life revolves around it…
It’s the end of a long shift at the end of the season – a team of gutters and their packer return to their hut on the coast – it’s Katy-Anne’s first season – tired and disenchanted she has cut her hand at the end of the shift. Once the wound has been cleaned and bandaged the women put the day to rights… the conversation settles to evaluating the season – it’s benefits and the price paid and what happens next, their return to the village, Catherine’s wedding and the changes it will bring… It is not until Peggy calls round that conversation shifts to talk of the past…rumours about Maggie’s husband – infamous for his brutish attitude to everything and the relationship she had with a sailor who perished on the same boat. This results in a revelation that will change things forever. Once this information is revealed the family need to re-evaluate their relationships, their view of family, marriage, their connection and their community.
